Time to Unplug
Posted by Joanna on December 13, 2018
The winter solstice will soon be upon us. The hustle and bustle of the holidays brings a special type of energy which helps me to endure the shorter days and colder temperatures.
As our Winter Break approaches, most of us are planning activities and gatherings with family and friends. As you make your plans, I encourage you, and especially your children, to take time away from the digital world. This week, CBS reported on new brain research aimed at understanding the impact that digital devices have on our children. Evidence shows that excessive use of technology disrupts normal healthy development. In her report, Screen time for kids: How to prioritize and create guidelines, psychologist and CBS News contributor Lisa Damour said, “We’re trying to protect sleep. We’re trying to protect family time. We’re trying to protect focus. So I think the guidelines should flow from there.” Check out Anderson Cooper’s report on 60 Minutes for a fascinating look at the research.
It is heart-warming to see our halls brimming with gifts and donations for those in need. For the first time, all Project Bethlehem families were adopted well before the requested date. I thank you so much for your amazing generosity. Whatever holiday you celebrate, if any at all, I hope you can unplug and enjoy time with your loved ones.
I look forward to seeing you in the new year!
