Diwali Celebration

Posted by Michelle on October 24, 2019

ASM is fortunate to be a community rich in diversity. Our families form a tapestry that is woven from a variety of cultures, experiences and interests. To celebrate UN Day, elementary and middle school student ambassadors gave presentations on China, India, Kenya, Poland, Puerto Rico and Ukraine. Lower Elementary students were treated to a delicious feast from around the world. Children’s House students and their families shared stories, songs and activities together. Traditional outfits looked beautiful on students and adults alike. The gifts of our collective cultural heritage enable our students to develop a deeper understanding of one another and bring an exciting dimension to the classroom.

Next week, we can all look forward to learning more about the customs of India. I am excited to invite you to a new celebration at ASM, Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Diwali is a festival in India that celebrates new beginnings, the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. People decorate their homes with lights, diyas (clay oil lamps) and offer puja (worship to the goddess Lakshmi). Diwali is a time to wear new clothes, light firecrackers and share delicious feasts with friends, family and neighbors. Children and adults alike enjoy a variety of mithai (sweets) to end their meal.

Please join us Friday, November 1 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. to celebrate Diwali. Thank you to the many volunteers who are starting a new tradition at ASM!
