Message from the Head of School
We hope that you find our website to be informative and that it intrigues you enough to visit us in person. ASM started in 1975 as a small one room Montessori pre-school, located in a church building. Today, we serve 200 students ages 3 through 8th grade in a facility that was built in 1996 and expanded in 2001. In many ways, the world was a different place in 1975. Because of technological advances, it is getting smaller and smaller. The children being educated now will be citizens of the world; in fact, some already are. Our responsibility is to provide as many opportunities as possible for students to learn about the rest of the world, its people and how they live.
Students at ASM work closely with teachers to meet high academic standards while progressing through the Montessori curriculum at their own pace; moving ahead when they are ready, yet being able to stay with a concept until it is understood. Research becomes a tool to open up unknown worlds. Students develop the ability to work independently and personal accomplishments engender a true sense of self-satisfaction.
Peace and the environment are also emphasized in the Montessori philosophy. Environmental themes are intertwined across subject areas. Students are involved in recycling programs to reduce waste and learn the importance of respecting the Earth. Conflict resolution is modeled from Children's House through Middle School. Classroom Peace Corners are used by students to resolve issues and sometimes as a place to think. Students also work together to establish guidelines for classroom behavior.
As a Montessori school, ASM cherishes the values of grace, courtesy, respect and empathy. We embrace the concept of community service. Students at all levels participate in projects that help the community and develop community spirit. Many community service projects are lead by ASM parents through PACE (Parent Association) or individually. ASM is a community of families, students, faculty, staff and a board of directors, all engaged in the education of children. If our values and approach to education are what you are seeking for your child, we hope that you will join us.
Best regards, Peg Roberts, Head of School
